Over the weekend media event to promote his new movie, Khan made an offensive rape remark, triggering outrage. The 50-year-old actor described the challenges of playing the role of a professional wrestler: “During those six hours of shooting, there’d be so much of lifting and thrusting on the ground involved. That is the most difficult thing.” Then Khan added: “When I used to walk out of that ring, it used to be like a raped woman walking out.”
In the audio, played on TV here, some journalists are heard giggling at the remark. But what was not played on television is that Khan also said after a pause: “I don’t think I should have …”
Many ardently agree that he shouldn't have.
The state-run National Commission for Women demanded a public apology from Khan within seven days.
Women’s rights activist Kavita Krishnan said: “Salman’s comment trivializes rape, but it is not just Salman. Rape analogies are common in society and films.”
Asha Pande, the mother of the woman who was fatally gang raped in 2012 in a moving bus in New Delhi, told a television channel: “It is wrong for a star like Salman to say this, he has made fun of rape victims.”
Khan is no stranger to controversies. He was accused in a fatal hit-and-run case more than a decade ago. Last year, in a controversial decision, a court in Mumbaioverturned Khan’s conviction. He is also charged in a case of shooting a protected local species of antelope.
On Twitter, Khan was attacked with the hashtag #InsenstiveSalman. Almost simultaneously another hashtag floated by his fans — #SalmanMisquoted — began trending.
All I can say, SALMANKHAN has got his part of publicity. And come on Indians instead of putting your minds in what is SALMANKHAN saying put your mind in awareness of the society. Make your neighbourhood free from negative clutches. Stand together and create a safe india
